Uganda : FISH EXPORTS SET TO DROP US$ 59 MILLION THIS YEAR
Uganda’s fish exports will drop by sh96 billion (US$ 59 million) by the end of the year, the State minister for fisheries, Mr. Fred Mukisa, said.  The loss will be caused by trade of immature fish, insufficient funding for the industry and technical problems. Mr. Mukisa called for concerted efforts to save the industry, saying that it employed 400 000 people and contributed to the livelihood of over 1.5 million people

Kenya : MINISTRY OF FISHERIES SET FOR MAJOR RESTRUCTURING
The Ministry of Fisheries is set for restructuring with the creation of an office of a Fisheries Secretary, the Minister Paul Otuoma said recently. Under the new structure, the ministry would have four new departments; quality assurance, marketing and value addition; inland, marine and deep-sea fisheries and aquaculture development. A Fisheries Development Authority would be set up to generate funds for fisheries research and development.

Kenya :GOVERNMENT TO FORMULATE FISHERIES POLICY

The fisheries Ministry is set to formulate a policy that will see communities living in the Lake basin region benefit from relevant research from the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute to enable them to embrace aquaculture.

Speaking while touring aquaculture projects in Nyakach constituency Fisheries Minister Paul Otuoma said increased population of fishermen and the global climatic changes posed serious threats to the availability of fish in the Lake.

Mozambiques: SEASONAL BAN ON SHRIMP FISHING IMPOSED

Mozambique recently slapped a six-month fishing ban on shrimp and other deep water crustaceans along its 2 500 km coastlines rich in marine resources, as exports fell by 40% due to high fuel prices. The seasonal ban applied to industrial and semi-industrial trawlers as well as traditional fishing vessels.

In the first half of 2008, Mozambique exported shrimp valued at US$ 20 million to the European Union, the United States and some southern African countries.

Ghana : IMPOSES FINE FOR PAIR TRAWLING

The Ministry of Fisheries has declared ‘war’ on trawlers that stray into Ghanaian waters and promised that the full force of the law will be applied against those who engage in pair trawling. The Ministry announced that owners of the two trawlers caught by the Ghana Navy engaging in pair trawling at Apam last week had been fined $48,000, after admitting the offence.

South Africa : FISHERMEN UNHAPPY ABOUT SUSPENSION OF RIGHTS

Zambia: DR CONGO RELEASES ZAMBIAN FISHERMEN, 'OTHERS STILL BEING HELD'
The Zambian government announced Monday that 30 fishermen arrested by authorities from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo on cross-border Lake Mweru had been released but fishermen nabbed in earlier raids were reportedly still being held. Defense Minister George Mpombo said all 30 fishermen, who were rounded up at gunpoint on the lake in early February on suspicion of illegally crossing the border and taken into detention in the DR Congo, had been reunited with their families.
