Tanzania - Coastline prey to dynamite fishing
Dynamite fishing destroys underwater habitats like coral reefs and sea grass that provide food and shelter for many fish species by turning these into flat wastelands, killing fish and other marine life in due course. This, therefore, causes a rapid decline in the fish catches altering the livelihold of fisheries
Tanzanian fish catches have recorded a drastic reduction in number and some of the endangered fish species are increasingly disappearing, due to massive dynamite fishing.
The illegal fishing method, which is uncontrolled along the whole of Tanzania's coastline, destroys fish breeding sites whether they are located in deep or shallow waters. The threat of dynamite fishing also extends to human beings who are working or living close to the sea particularly those who are involved in this criminal activity.
Dynamite fishing has hurt people, killed others and driven away tourist from marine attractions. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism puts the number of people who die from dynamite fishing at 110 annually. |
