Namibia - Namibians still shy away from fish

Dr Abraham Iyambo, minister of Ministry of Fisheries and Marine resources stated that he has decided to allocate an amount of 11 000 metric tons of horse mackerel, to improve local fish consumption. This allocation is given to the Namibian Fish consumption trust. The fund board will ensure that there is sufficient supply of Namibian fish and its affordability in the local markets. The trust will promote “eat more fish” campaign to hotels, lodges and restaurants.
Products like horse-mackerel, hake, dentex, fish sausages, angelfish, alfonsino and jacopfever, amongst others will also be promoted for consumption. The minister requested that the trust work out a plan on fish distribution in the various regions. Previous efforts by Government aimed at promoting fish consumption in Namibia included building an N$2.8 million fish restaurant at Ongwediva and in Swakopmund.

Despite being on of the Highest fish producing nation in SADC , Namibian still shy away from fish, the per caput consumption has remind at 10 % over the year in spite of strong campaign from both the Ministry of fisheries and the fish consumption trust that ia entrusted to promote fish consumption in the country. A word from around indicate that fish are too expensive in the domestic market as compare to other substitute products. Fish being regarded as the healthiest food, sure the Namibian government and the fishing industry need to do something about improving fish consumption in the local market.
